County Road 3 Wetland Creation

The County Road 3 Wetland Creation is a 0.60-acre site located at the Breckenridge Ski Area in Summit County, Colorado.  Prior to founding Birch Ecology, Heather Houston was the plant ecologist responsible for implementing the wetland revegetation plan.  This unique project restored the wetlands to an area that was previously impacted by construction of Summit County Road 3.  When the road was relocated, a wetland creation was constructed along the abandoned road corridor which now connects the forested wetlands above and below the road.  The wetland hydrology is provided by wetland seeps located upslope of the site.  Water flows through a series of elongated ponds and is discharged into the wetlands below.  Revegetation included a wetland seeding, and the planting of 180 nursery-grown trees and shrubs, 700 willow cuttings, and 9,000 herbaceous wetland plants.  The project achieved the restoration success criteria within the minimum monitoring period.
